The rules are just the pathfinder rules and very well explained and transparent. There you can decide if you want real time with pause or turn based. What also is very good in my opinion is the new pathfinder games, Kingmaker and Wrath of the righteous. I can recommend Divinity 2 though, as the turn based combat and the much simpler, more videogamey rules just made it feel a lot better. Could not get into the story at all and found the overarching story and the setting very boring. Not only what was told but also how it was told drove me nuts. It uses a ruleset similar to that of tabletop rpgs but not close enough if you a familiar with DnD or Pathfinder to feel at home. One aspect certainly was the combat, real time with pause just isn't my thing, I prefer turn based. Played Pillars 1 and 2 and couldn't really get into it. IMHO "Divinity original sin 2": handles things much better and feels far more immersive even though it is in theory a very similar game. I feel like the game has to be approached as a book and if it doesn't immerse you then it won't be enjoyable. Instead of permitting them to arise organically. This isn't bad but when you need explanations for tons of names, concepts, historical facts etc. I genuinely believe that a turn based system would have been much more satisfying and combat would feel more special. So much of the game is conveyed by text and static portraits, it is very hard (for me) to feel any connection to the characters in game. While I do not know exactly what causes it I have some guesses. I have played the game to the finish but stopped multiple times due to the exact feeling you are describing.
